Klipsch and the Bullshit Button

January 21, 2008 by Lukas Gilkey

I was digging around on Klipsch's website for that last article and stumbled upon this...

"Paul W. Klipsch was known for having many eccentricities, including his famous 'Bullsh*t' motto. He started using the slogan after reading a competitor’s loudspeaker ad that made claims of supposed 'breakthroughs.' After that, he wore a 'Bullsh*t' button behind his lapel and showed it to anyone he felt was making an outlandish claim."

It's funny how things haven't changed much. I've lost count of how many times I've heard marketing claims that seem to defy the laws of physics. We should all take note from Mr. Klipsch and start questioning the bullshit claims we hear rather than blindly believing them as so many do.

Cheers to Mr. Klipsch and his Bullshit button, I may just have to order one...

Unfortunately that's the nature of the high-end audio business. I've generally found that the less complex the product, the more marketing bullshit is needed to sell it. Top of the line turntables, line-stage preamps, CD players and the like can sell on quality of build materials, or capacitors and power supplies, or signal processing.

At the other end of the spectrum are things like cables, anti-vibration platforms, and other "tweak" devices which need maximum marketing.

Mr. Klipsch would have worn his button out if he ever had the chance to place "Machina Dynamica" magic stones on top of his "Pear Anjou" cables.
