John "Zaph" Krutke of Zaph Audio has posted a new DIY recipe for building a 3.5-way floorstanding ZDT3 "Dayton Tower," comprised of Dayton Audio RS series drivers and an Aura tweeter. The 9" wide three chamber enclosure used for the ZDT3 is also the enclosure from Zaph Audo's Waveguide TMM design, and features a removable front baffle. The lower chamber can be filled with sand for increased rigidity or used to house the crossover, and is also height adjustable. Bass drivers for the ZDT3 are twin Dayton RS180 7" woofers. Midrange frequencies are handled by a Dayton RS52 2" dome mid-tweeter, with an Aura NT1 .75" titanium dome tweeter providing high frequencies.

Zaph claims that the Dayton RS series drivers provide performance that can approach high-end European drivers at a fraction of the cost. The Dayton drivers are available at Parts Express, and the Aura tweeter and crossover components are available at Madisound. The ZDT3 page provides a full list of parts, recommended crossover settings and components, driver level and room placement suggestions, and measurement test results. The pair of speakers will cost you about $410 including the crossovers and drivers.

Maybe it is just me but something turns me off about that project.

I probably sounds rather nice, but visually it is not appealing to me.

Would there be any benefit to arranging the drivers similar to an MTM? Midwoofer/Midrange/Tweeter/Midwoofer?
