DTS Enters Virtual Surround Sound Business
Filed under: Home Audio > Receivers
Like its competitors Dolby and SRS, DTS has developed their own virtual surround sound technology that they've dubbed "Surround Sensation." DTS has developed two variants of this technology, Surround Sensation Speaker and Surround Sensation Headphone. DTS explains that their virtual surround sound technology employs psychoacoustic techniques to alter the sound stage observed by the human ear.
The company also claims Surround Sensation is able to enhance digital audio by boosting the stereo image while leaving vocals unchanged, expand two channel sound by virtually creating center and rear channels and create fundamental bass waves by "dynamically augmenting harmonics." DTS Surround Sensation technology will be licensed by multiple electronics companies, so expect to see new DTS Surround Sensation stickers on various products at your local electronics retailer any time now.

DTS sounds way better than Dolby Digital mostly because so much less compression is used (the bitrate is actually very close to the new Dolby Digital+). Their first attempt at creating surround from stereo though, DTS Neo:6, wasn't well received.
