Archos 405 30GB Portable Media Player

Archos has unveiled a new 30GB version of their 405 Generation 5 personal media player. Unlike the earlier version which used 2GB of flash memory, the new 30GB version is hard drive based. The 405 30GB features "DVD quality" video playback on its 16M color 3.5" screen, enhanced ARCLibrary music customization options, and instant photo transfer capability. The optional Gen 5 DVR Station provides full DVR capability with one-touch scheduling and recording, and an integrated electronic program guide.

As is the case with most Archos products, the 405 does not provide a huge amount of functionality out of the box. Support for various video formats such as MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 must be installed via separately purchased "Cinema" and "Podcast" plug-ins. The 405 30GB is available for purchase from the Archos web store for €199.99 ($295), and will be available at European retail stores at the end of this month.
