Digg Founder Kevin Rose and His DIY Audio / Video Cables
Filed under: Home Audio > Wire & Cable > Interconnects
I found this old school video of Digg's founder Kevin Rose (circa 2005) learning how to make some very nice diy audio and video cables. The video is a bit long, but the first part covers the basics, while the second and third parts cover video and audio cable construction. The audio cables use Canare F-09 connectors with Belden 82761 cable and look pretty good. I may just have to make some of these for the hell of it.

My God, the guy assisting him is a complete tool, he just used a razor to strip wire in a How-to guide.

Overall video was nice, but I saw a few flaws. Here is what I saw
- Gold is not best conductor
- He used more solder then he needed too, and the fact he advised more solder is better :/
- He didnt prep the Gold before soldering, he may see issues.
- Didnt use proper tools for the job
I am sure he knows what he is doing, and cables work fine, but for a How-to video you got to be anal about everything.

True, but the cables will end up much better then just about anything you can buy for the price.
What i would suggest is going the compression route. Get a stripper, a compression tool and rca compression ends. no soldering needed and very strong connections when done right, which isent really hard after a few of them.

the easiest connectors I have seen to date has to be them Tara-Labs. Very idiot proof. You just need the cable to be a certain diameter, then shove it in, screw down, and Allah-Kazam!

I've always liked solder over crimp. (Probably the RF background)
I actually solder a lot of my crimp cables. Especially when I am doing RF cables.
Neat video none the less.

I have to admit I didn't even look at the finished cables, after I saw him strip the wire like that I just turned it off. Couldn't stand his ignorance anymore.
