Creative Class-Action Settlement

Lately there have been a multitude of class-action suits brought against hard drive manufacturers and other companies that use disk storage in their products over the amount of space a drive is claimed to have vs. its actual formatted capacity. Creative Labs has been hit with one of these suits, and has proposed a settlement that would force Creative to "make certain disclosures regarding the storage capacity of its hard disc drive MP3 players," and offer a 50% discount on a new 1GB player or 20% off any item purchased at Creative's online store to those who purchased a Creative MP3 player made between May 5, 2001 and April 30, 2008. As is usually the case with these kinds of suits, all of the money will go to attorney's fees. If you have a Creative MP3 player and would like a 20% off coupon, applications for the settlement are due by August 7, 2008.

Wait a second, so even with 20% off coupons Creative will presumably still be making a profit. Gotta love companies that can turn a class action lawsuit into a sales promo.

I can't blame them really. I think suits like that are completely ridiculous.
