Blu-ray Music - First Album Release

May 30, 2008 by Lukas Gilkey

A Norwegian record label by the name of 2L stakes its claim as being the first to release a music-only album on Blu-ray. 2L (Lindberg Lyd) is celebrating their 50th record release with the Blu-ray album and wanted to make it "a milestone in format." The album is titled "Divertimenti" and features TrondheimSolistene (the Trondheim soloists), a highly regarded orchestra in a Norway.

Album Tracks -
Bejamnin Britten: Simple Symphony
Grazyna Bacewicz: Concerto for string orchestra
Terje Bjørklund: Carmina
Béla Bartók: Divertimento for strings

Blu-ray Music Formats:
- 2.0 LPCM 24BIT/192 kHz
- 5.1 LPCM 24BIT/192 kHz
- 5.1 DTS HD Master Audio 24BIT/192 kHz
- 5.1 Dolby True HD 24BIT/192 kHz
- 5.1 Dolby Digital 48kHz
All formats are compatible with the Sony PlayStation3.

"The Blu-ray technology makes use of five separate sound tracks, which entails a complex recording and mixing process conditioned by very sophisticated equipment. 2L has cooperated with equipment manufacturers and the record now available is the fruit of a combined effort opening up new vistas of sound rendition. The sound is, as with Blu-ray images, like nothing you've heard before. Each instrument is clearly positioned, creating a multidimensional listening experience of utmost clarity. But since very few so far have the proper home equipment to actually play Blu-ray discs, the release also includes a SACD disc, playable on all standard CD players and computers." - Music Information Centre Norway (MIC)

Pricing appears to be just under $40 not including shipping.

Neil Young recently announced that he will also be releasing a series of Blu-ray albums.

Who on earth would buy this and then want to use the 48kHz Dolby Digital track?

Interesting... I would have though the copy of Nine Inch Nails "Ghosts" that I have on Blue-Ray here in my office would have been the first.

Oh well... I guess if it gets them free press. I doubt Trent Reznor would care much.
