Maelstrom X Has Landed

Don't be confused by the title: the Maelstrom-X is not an alien. The Exodus Audio Maelstrom X subwoofer is set to become one of the premier 18" bass drivers at any price, and it is even more alluring when you look at the price: $349.99 plus shipping. The pre-order is now over and these drivers are shipping out to many who are waiting with bated breath. Maybe a look at the monster would pique your interest....


So what is so special? Well, this is an 18" driver with 33mm of linear Xmax using the patented XBL^2 approach. This is paired with what is being referred to as "AlCu shorting rings", which is essentially the use of both aluminum and copper shorting rings strategically placed to lower, and improve the linearity of, inductance. The result is a wide bandwidth, high output, low distortion subwoofer that really sets the pace at and above its price point.


Kevin Haskins of Exodus Audio is currently measuring a small sample of drivers to determine the production Thiele/Small parameters, but has indicated that so far they are close to the pre-production parameters.
