JL Audio Fathom F212 Subwoofer Coming Soon
Filed under: Home Audio > Subwoofers
Small bits of info have been released by JL Audio regarding their new Fathom F212 subwoofers. The Fathom F212 is designed as a more affordable option to their flagship Gotham G213 subwoofer. The Fathom F212 features dual 12W7 drivers that have been updated to offer lower distortion with more powerful motors. The integrated amplifier will be of the Class D variety and include JL's patented feedback loop technology. The subwoofer also appears to have the the ARO (Automatic Room Optimization) system found on all of the other JL Audio home subwoofers.
The JL Audio Fathom F212 subwoofer is expected to begin shipping on August 1st and is available for pre-order from authorized JL Home Audio dealers with a retail price of $6,000.

Considering the Fathom is a reference class subwoofer, it's price tag is actually rather reasonable. To get that level of performance from a loudspeaker or amplifier, you're looking at $20K+.

In the commercial realm, you've got a point, Dave. Though there are others who have designed systems with arguably similar performance for less money (although without the same level of engineering), the real value is in DIY. For $6,000, I could make that Fathom look mighty silly.
Mind you, I'm not the person these systems are usually aimed at.

Obviously going the DIY route could produce something pretty insane for this kind of money. In the commercial realm though, Fathom/Gotham have very few real challengers. I'm sure the Velodyne 1812 Signature could probably give the Gotham a challenge, but other than that there's only the exotics like the Krell MR and Thor's Hammer.

I would say the internet subs can bring it pretty strong for the $.
there are more and more every month...
this is interesting, but i can't afford it...I would have liked to see JL make the dual subs more affordable than a pair of singles... i just don't see why they didn't go after that. In fact, i can argue its cheaper to make a dual sub. In the case of the G212... ok they used some pretty crazy fiberglass box... we'll rule it out, but this looks like two F112's boxes... what's the difference? 1000 more dollars and the restriction of not being able to put them in different locations or use them on separate circuits? And don't give me that upgraded driver marketing nonsense… not for that kind of price difference.
