Infinity Prelude Forty Speakers

In celebration of their 40th anniversary, Infinity is taking another stab at the high-end of the market with their new flagship Prelude Forty speakers. Like the Prelude MTS system that preceded it, the Prelude Forty uses all Ceramic Metal Matrix Diaphragm (CMMD) drivers in a very narrow baffle enclosure for maximum horizontal dispersion. Instead of conventional cone midranges though, the Prelude 40 uses four of Infinity's unique "Maximum Radiating Surface" flat-panel midrange transducers, (also seen in the Cascade series) which are claimed to provide more accurate response and time alignment than cones.

High and low frequency response are covered by a CMMD tweeter with response past 40kHz, and a pair of passive 8" CMMD side-firing woofers. The Prelude Forty speakers are available in high-gloss black, real-wood cherry and rosewood finishes, priced at $6,000/ea.

That's a flagship?

Certainly interesting looking. Actually, with different colors of wood, I would really like the aesthetics.

This is what passes for an Infinity flagship in the H/K era. They wont let Infinity compete with Revel at the high end of the market, so we'll never see another Infinity that can compare to the stuff they were making when folks like John Ulrick (now at Spectron) and Arnie Nudell (now at Genesis) were running the show. In a sense, the Genesis 1.1 is the spiritual successor to Infinity flagships like the IRS.
