MTV Plays Music Videos… Online

October 31, 2008 by Dave Kay

Those older than 25 or so may remember that MTV (Music Television to the oldsters) once actually aired music videos. During the day. For more than a minute. If you miss those days and would like to see some of your favorite videos again, or have only ever known MTV as the reality cesspool it is today and would like to see how it used to be, check out MTV's new video site.

The MTVM website is still in Beta, and while the selection is exhaustive, it does not currently include every video that has ever aired on MTV. I was disappointed to find Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" and Megadeth's "Sweating Bullets" both missing, but there are still loads of videos for music lovers, including all the Rick Astley you could ever want. Every video is in high quality and is embeddable, and the selection also includes interviews, and performance clips from VH1 Storytellers and MTV Unplugged. Definitely worth checking out.

It's about time MTV started playing full-length music videos via one form of media.

Now how about those Beavis and Butthead episodes where they made fun of the videos?

Man I had totally forgotten about B&B.

I guess I will spend some time on MTV now seeing what they have to offer.

Since this article invokes the original spirit of MTV- "once actually aired music videos. During the day. For more than a minute."

Also missing from its original 80's hey day:

Heaven 17
Duran Duran
Flock of Seagulls
Roxy Music
and on, and on, and on.

Oh well- it is in beta : )
