Sony Blue about CDs

November 7, 2008 by Dave Kay

Now that Blu-ray has won the high-def wars, Sony has apparently decided that CDs should go Blu as well. Sony calls the new discs "Blu-spec". What does this mean to you? Probably very little. The Blu-spec CD isn't really a new format, nor will it require a special decoder like HDCD. Basically, the only difference between Blu-spec and good old Red Book is new pressing machines that use Blu-ray lasers to burn the CDs.

Sony claims that the new machines will reduce vibration and improve laser quality, leading to better sound quality, though your CD player will still be reading the disc using its "old school" laser. Sixty Blu-spec titles are said to be ready by Christmas, with prices similar to standard CDs.

More expencive media... Check
More expencive process... Check
Exactly the same information as the cheaper media... Check

I could understand it if it was somehow a higher bitrate/encoding/whatever but does not seem to have any additional stuff.

From a business standpoint why do this? they already have all the machines for cds (or known companies that do it for cheap) and with this "new" media nothing new at all has to be bought to play it so no revenue there. It may be "cool" but seems just silly if you are not going to have more data/some real reason to have it. Not to just put more Blu stuff out there.

Also this is almost exactly the opposite of the Blu ray business model. kinda weird.

great

*rollseyes*

this world needs to get rid of these stupid, fragile discs and move on to the next thing, be it memory sticks or whatever will last more than a couple scratches.

From this it sounds like they're just going to stick a "Blu-Spec" sticker on CDs to ride the Blu-Ray hype. I can't understand why though since Sony probably has higher profit margins through online music sales. If anything, they should promote Sony-BMG online sales.
