Those are some damn ugly headphones. I'd feel like a freaking robot with those on. What ever happened to subtle details? Class? I don't know. They look like some crap you'd see on DJ Dikhead at a club.

Who wrote this article anyway? Not to be an ass, but to say "brands like AKG, Audio Tehnica, Grado, and Denon, have all released new flagships which outperform Sennheiser's venerable HD 650" is absolutely absurd. What does Denon know about headphones? About as much as Armani knows about watches (though they sell them everywhere).

Go to headwize or head-fi and spend 5 minutes in the forums. Many people have their preferences, but to say these other headphones outperform the 650s is simply ignorant. The 650's have been out for at least 4 years and I just picked up a pair. I won't buy a plasma TV if a new model is coming out in the next month, but these headphones are such a strong contender that they'll stand the test of time. The HD-800 is in no way an answer to its competition. It's over twice the cost of the 650s. I can only think of a couple models of the brands mentioned about that come close to that price (esp. in terms of a mass produced product).

I wrote the article. Sorry, but the HD 650 has been beat. Go listen to the AKG K701/702, they are better headphones. I also prefer the Beyer DT880 to the Sennheiser, but that's a personal preference.

Apparently you've never listened to the D5000. Denon knows a thing or two about making headphones. The new D7000 is a monster, it can compete with any can on the market.

Last I checked, the Denon cans were very well received on the Head-Fi forum.

And last I checked, the 650 has never been the be-all-end-all of audiophile headphones or even of Sennheiser's product line. The 650 is heavily colored. In fact, the little pamphlet that comes with the 650 will even tell you, proudly, that Sennheiser tweaked the 650 acoustically to "fit the tastes of the average listener" (or something along those lines). This means that it's unrealistically warm, with exaggerated bass, and it's also the reason why a lot of people prefer the crisper, much more neutral hd 580 and 600. And have you even used the k701? I don't see how anyone who has (and who isn't a basshead) could compare it unfavorably to the 650.
