B&W Panorama 5.1 Channel Soundbar

B&W has released their first Soundbar called the Panorama, which crams a full 5.1 channels, as well as 175 watts of Class D amplification into a single slim aluminum tube. The Panorama contains a total of nine drivers. Two woofers, two midrange drivers, and an aluminum tweeter housed in B&W's signature Nautilus Tube are devoted to the center channel, while the remaining four drivers are used for the front L/R and surround L/R channels, each housed in their own enclosure to avoid interference.

Digital signal processing provides the faux surround effect, while a total of six Class D amps provide a combined 175 watts of power to the system. B&W claims that bass output is substantial enough that a separate subwoofer is not necessary. The Panorama can accommodate up to five sources with its two optical digital inputs, one coaxial digital input and two stereo analogue inputs. It is designed to match flat panel TVs 37" and larger, and can be either stand or wall mounted. The price is $2,200.

I still dont like soundbars no matter who makes them...

could they put more features into a small speaker please?

neither do I, but they must be popular for so many manufacturers to be jumping on the soundbar bandwagon. I guess people want better sound than their TV can offer, but are willing to expend absolutely no effort to achieve it. A soundbar is the easiest, most minimal upgrade possible.

I must say that I wouldn't spend the money on a soundbar of any type.

However, there are people who want decent surround sound but don't want to have the speakers. So, I really don't blame B&W for trying to expand their market. Especially since times are tough, I really doubt their sales of top of the line gear is what is keeping the company afloat. Diversification is almost always a good idea. This also gets the B&W name into more homes and it because a more common company name to people outside of the Audio/Video community.
