Dolby Pro Logic IIz Adds Even More Speakers to Your Home Theater
Filed under: Home Audio > Receivers
Remember the good old days, when a 7.1 system was considered overkill? Well move over Grandpa, because Dolby's latest version of Pro Logic II called IIz moves home theater into the world of 9.1. Pro-Logic IIz calls for the new speakers to be mounted to the side and a few feet above the main front left and right channels, presumably on the wall. The Dolby Pro Logic IIz decoder identifies and decodes spatial cues that occur naturally in stereo or multi-channel soundtracks, such as ambiance and some amorphous effects like rain or wind, and directs it to these new "height speakers", similar to Yamaha Cinema DSP and their "presence channel" system.
Onkyo's new TX-SR607 ($599) is the first receiver to include DPL IIz, and it should show on most of the '07 models this year, as well as receivers from other brands. DPL IIz works with traditional stereo and multi-channel soundtracks, so you won't have to worry about replacing your DVDs or Blu-ray discs with new DPL IIz encoded versions. Whether more realistic rain drops is worth the price of a new pair of speakers is up to you.

I'm the biggest fan of speakers in the whole wide world, but 9.1 now? Really? I'd prefer fewer channels of better speakers. And since the pic above has over $30k in B&W speakers showing, the idea of driving them with a $599 Onkyo receiver makes my head explode. No thanks.

The Goldmund custom designed rooms have something like 128 different audio channels if I remember correctly. That's just insane.
IMHO, 7.1 surround and anything beyond is a waste. Very few movies even give the option for 7.1, and even then almost nothing comes out of the two rear channels. Most people probably wouldn't even notice if they were disconnected.
I have a 7.1 setup, and I prefer movies in simulated stereo running all 7 channels than true 7.1 surround. 7.1 simulated just sounds so much more "in your face" than 7.1 surround to me.

I've also generally been more of a fan of "5ch Stereo" than watching a movie in Dolby Digital or DTS, since most film soundtracks send 90%+ to the center channel, and leave the rest of the speakers to sit there and do nothing.
The exception is concert DVDs. When they are produced properly, the DTS 5.1 track usually sounds more like live music than 5ch Stereo, which sounds like a music video.

Very true Dave. I've been listening to some SACD's in full surround lately, and when done properly they will blow your mind.
