HDMI Group Releases HDMI 1.4 Spec

Until now, the various HDMI specification changes have built on the original design, using basically the same cables and just adding features. With the new HDMI 1.4, that's about to change. Yes, all of your HDMI devices, ports, and cables are now officially obsolete. Isn't technology fun?

The new features in HDMI version 1.4 include a bi-directional Ethernet Channel for networking and internet connection sharing, an Audio Return Channel which allows an HDTV to send a digital audio stream to an A/V receiver eliminating the need for an optical digital output, 3D display support, and support for "4K" (4096x2160) ultra high-def displays. There will also be a special automotive version designed to meet the "rigors and environmental issues" found in cars. The connectors, both standard and mini, are of course different and completely incompatible with older components.
