Focal Chorus 800 V Lineup

July 18, 2007 by JD Mattioli

Focal-JM Lab has recently unveiled the latest version of its Chorus 800 line four years after updating it last. The new series is called Chorus 800 V and features two bookshelf speakers, three floor-standing, a center channel, a surround and a sub woofer. The manufacturer redesigned for performance and aesthetics with the new 800 V speakers. The "V" in the name comes from the v-shaped cabinet, and more noticeably the V cut out of the top if the grill. JM Lab acknowledged that the "V" shape is becoming popular in automobile designs. For performance the speakers' lows and highs were tweaked. For instance, the new tweeters use a new neodymium motor to produce six times less than the total harmonic distortion than the previous Chorus speakers produced. Also, the subwoofers utilize an extended port for tighter, more defined bass response. A basic 5.1 setup using entry-level mains costs $4100 retail and with the Chorus 836 V's that price goes to $6300.
