Sony Personal Field Speakers

October 10, 2007 by Michael Curry

Sony has developed a new headphone technology that supposedly mimics audiophile-grade loudspeakers. The PFR-V1 headphones, also dubbed "Personal Field Speakers," are basically miniature, two-way loudspeakers that you can affix to your noggin. The headphones are the first to separate the bass from the mid range and highs, which results in a frequency response of 35 to 25,000 Hz. The bass is reproduced through an "extended bass reflux duct" that fits into the ear canal. While the treble and mids are reproduced by a 21mm driver that Sony has developed specifically for these headphones.

The PFR-V1 acoustical head gear are available today from Audio Cubes, but will unfortunately set you back about $540. However, letting everyone know you're a diehard audio junkie, priceless.

Sony and audiophile-grade is an oxymoron.

I realize that they are trying to improve imaging with that design but it's still not practical. I love headphones but if you're looking for strong imaging and staging, you're using the wrong equipment.

Actually Doodaddy, headphones are one of the few things that Sony still does very well. Name any pair of high-end audiophile headphones, and the Sony MDR-CD3000s, MDR-R10s, MDR-SA5000s, and Qualia 10s can at the very least compete with, if not beat them.
