Just when you thought CD was going nowhere, somebody comes along and thinks outside the box or shrinks down the box, wraps it in a nice wood veneer and changes the insides. Very very nice. Perreuax have developed something similar, but theirs matches the rest of their range (which is their entry level, yet still absolutely stunning, their top of the range radiance series intergrated amp is a giant killer)
PS Audio Prototype CD Transport
We stumbled upon this discreet looking CD transport at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest this past weekend. I had never seen it before, so I immediately started asking questions. Turns out it is so new that it doesn't even have a name yet.

This prototype from PS Audio has some very interesting features. The unit has a computer CD/DVD drive that it uses to buffer data off of the disk when loaded. It uses memory similar to computer RAM to very quickly load part of the CD into memory and plays the music solely from the copy in the memory. Of course once a CD is removed, the memory is cleared and ready for the next CD. This system of storing the data in memory is designed to nullify "jitter" and any other possible sound degradation derived from a normal CD player playing music directly from the disc.
Price will be under $2,000 and it is expected to be released in the first quarter of 2008. There will also be different wood options available.

This little guy is definitely going to be interesting. I think it also can use three toslink cables at once for a special jitter free data transfer system. Supposedly the new name is going to be Lambda II. Combine this with their new DL and their seriously good DAC you've got a challenge for even Esoteric.
