Spherical DIY Surround Sound Speakers
The newest Parts Express DIY project speakers are called the Sphericals. They are a creation of long time speaker enthusiast Darren Kuzma, who enjoys designing unique loudspeakers that are crafted from a variety of materials. In designing the Sphericals, Darren wanted not only to create a good sounding set of speakers, but a visual conversation piece that would “pop” in any décor. Therefore, Darren started to work and eventually ended up with a spherical design crafted from metal tubing, modeling plaster, and even a few frying pans. In order to match the aesthetic and sonic qualities of his design, Darren chose to utilize 3” bamboo cones and 1” titanium tweeters from Tang Band. In addition, Darren designed two custom crossovers for the front and surround speakers that are third order acoustic at approximately 2300Hz.
Each surround will cost about $90 for the drivers and crossover parts, and the the fronts/center will cost about $127 for the same parts. The parts needed for the enclosures are fairly inexpensive despite their complex appearance. For those brave enough to try building a set of your own Sphericals, Darren has general instructions and a parts list over at partsexpress.com.
