Pioneer has announced new technology called the Advanced Sound Retriever (ASR), which will be appearing in their car and home audio products. The ASR attempts to restore data lost in mp3 file encoding by examining the data and using algorithms to recover lost dynamics, harmonics, staging and tonality, much like Bongiovi’s Digital Power Station processor. Their new head unit with the ASR technology is the DEH-2000MP, which features MP3/WMA/WAV/CD Playback, an aux input for portable players, and a 4 x 50W Mosfet amplifier.

I'm skeptical of how well something like that can work. hrmz

Yeah it would seem to me that if you just use a high enough bitrate, say 256 VBR, then you really wouldn't need this kind of thing.

You bring up a good point Dave Kay.

Yes, any compression does alter the sound, but at such a high quality, I seriously doubt anyone who claims to hear it. It does seem trivial to even try to restore the data loss that is inaudible to begin with.
