M-Audio has released a new pair of collapsible sealed circum-aural cans for monitor or DJ use, the Q40 Studiophile. The Q40's use “professional grade” 40mm Mylar drivers which feature neodymium magnets and copper-clad aluminum voice coils. M-Audio claims that their drivers are larger than “most other” headphones, thus providing superior bass response.

Unfortunately which “most other” headphones they are referring to are not defined. It is worth noting that the Q40s’ direct competitors, the Sony V-700DJs and the Pioneer HDJ1000 Pros, both use 50mm drivers. Frequency response is rated at 10Hz to 20kHz, with sky high 116dB/mW sensitivity. Impedance is 64 Ohms, which is on the high side for use directly with a portable player, though the amazing sensitivity may be able to negate that issue. The Q40s include a detachable 10 foot cord terminated with a 1/8” mini-jack, and a 1/8”-1/4” adapter.

Price: $179.95
