Will Gullible Audiophiles Buy Absolutely ANYTHING?
There is certainly no shortage of “tweak” devices designed to separate audiophiles from their money by offering the promise of huge gains in sound quality. Some prime examples are the $200 Shakti Audio “Electromagnetic Stabilizer Stone” which sits on top of a line conditioner or transformer and is said to use proprietary noise reduction circuitry to absorb RF and EMI noise and dissipate them as heat, the $125/pr Creative Cable Concepts “Pigtails” which are designed to eliminate “Back-EMF”, a supposed distortion caused by the backward movement of cone and dome drivers by connecting to the positive terminal on a speaker, and the $1800 Furutech DeMag, which demagnetizes CDs and DVDs, cables, and somehow, vinyl LPs.
When it comes to shameless hucksterism and pure snake-oil though, none of these products or companies can even hold a candle to Machina Dynamica. Their products and their performance claims are so transparently ridiculous that it beggars belief.
Let’s start with the “Tru-Tone” electrical outlet cover, an “audiophile grade” outlet cover made with proprietary materials and processing techniques which “produce a remarkably powerful, detailed and focused sound.” Machina Dynamica recommends using at least three or four of them (and of course there’s the accompanying package deal, four for just $99!) on your outlets, including outlets with nothing plugged in to them.
It gets worse, far worse. The “Brilliant Pebbles” is, quite literally, a plastic bag filled with rocks. It is of course made with a number of “highly-specialized, proprietary techniques are used for preparation/assembly”, and is claimed to act as a “vibration ‘node damper’ and EMI/RFI absorber depending on size/application via atomic mechanisms in the crystal structures.” Machina Dynamica offers several different sizes of bags and rocks, with prices ranging from $39 to $159. There’s even a “white paper” on the Brilliant Pebbles, full of strings of words which make absolutely no sense.
There’s also the “Clever Little Clock”, a cheapie travel alarm clock (you won’t know what kind it is until you receive it in the mail) which has been modified with more of Machina Dynamica’s proprietary techniques. They set it from the “factory”; you aren’t even supposed to set the time. It runs on “special batteries” (which Machina Dynamica will replace for you when they run out, regular Duracells “won’t work”). What are you supposed to do with it? Just stick it somewhere in the room, and it will transform the sound of your system with its magic power. The clocks are apparently so clever that in order to test your system without them, you must “place the Clock outside the house structure, for example on the front steps -- but NOT in a drawer, closet, another room, basement or garage OR the family car.” The Clever Little Clock is an absolute bargain at just $199, especially considering the glowing review and award it received from Positive Feedback.
The product that jumps the shark, the most ridiculous of them all, is the “Teleportation Tweak”. You call Machina Dynamica on either a landline or cell phone, and they play a series of clicks and beeps for about 30 seconds. Machina Dynamic will transmit their sound magic over the phone, transforming your system, for just $60. There’s no physical product at all. 30 seconds of FAX modem noises, over the phone, for $60. It’s enough to make a Bose or Monster Cable marketer’s head explode. All of this would be very funny if no one actually fell for this stuff, but they do. Machina Dynamica has racked up over 750 sales on Audiogon alone. In an answer to my own question, will gullible audiophiles buy absolutely anything? Sadly, yes.

For the longest time I actually thought that was a joke website that was just making fun of audiophiles. I didn't think they were actually selling the stuff.

I, too, thought you guys had mistaken a joke site for being legitimate until you mentioned the audiogon sales. Wow. The phone call definitely takes the cake.
On a side note you should consider placing a login/register button down by the comment area. There's nothing to indicate what should be done to post and it should be a little more intuitive imho, down by the pertinent location on the page instead of up in the corner. Yeah it's not the end of the world searching around - just saying.

Funny stuff.
Note to self: never, ever read anything on Positive Feedback again. They just lost all credibility in my eyes.

At the risk of missing out on a truly spectacular tweak, forgive me if I don't bite at this one. What a complete load of crap this stuff is. To the 750 audiogone purchasers: Ya ever put on a speedo and an "I shot J.R" t-shirt combo? Now THATS a tweak! Something about that early eighties "proprietary" silkscreen process. Mention Machina Dynamica & I'll give ya half off, you deserve it!

Wow. Just....wow. I didn't know you could lie to sell your product. Isn't that what fraud is? It still seems like a joke, considering the ONE staff member lists his first duty as "bottle washer". Somebody should go after these crooks. I can't believe I spent $4,200 there. I feel so lonely.

The first time I saw the Machina Dynamica page I thought it was some sort of "April Fools audiophiles!" joke as well, until I saw the products selling on Audiogon auctions to real people for real money. It just blows my mind.
Perhaps I should start a side business selling rocks in bag. I'll put a big rock in a bag, call it the "Sub-Stone" for placing on top of a subwoofer, and sell it for $300. The rocks will be made using my own proprietary techniques, and each will be individually tailored to the customer, so no two rocks will look exactly alike.
Rather than the $7K Pear cables, I'd LOVE to see a million dollar double-blind challenge with the Clever Little Clock or Tru-tone outlet covers.

I use the outlet cover in my vehicle for covers around terminals. They are a flawless product.

I mentioned the Machina Dynamica stones to the salesman at a local a/v shop in jest and he told me that anything placed on top of a cd player would change the sound. I believe I know one of the 750.

Okay, I tried the Shaki Stones and On-lines. The Shaki products make a difference. I prefer them on my triplite voltage line stabilizer and conditioner for video use. For audio use, the bass line gets tighter/punchier but there's greyness or additional haze in the mids. I'm using EAR gear in the main system ($40K cost) with VPI TNT VI/SME IV/Benz Ruby-you get the idea. So, this tweak was not what I wanted.
However, don't denigrate the Furutech. No, I don't own one, it's too expensive. It works; however, the RD-1 I purchased for CDs/DVDs for $100 was a steal. Plus, a Walker Talisman magnet bar works just as well for Cds/DVDs and LPs (it's primary design). It's $200. For the difference in every record (I have 25,000) or Cds/DVDs (I have 7,000/700), it's a very very noticeable difference.
The pebbles and clocks-too subtle, probably not what I want and certainly the science behind it is too vague or absent for much of Machina Dynamica stuff.
I'll stick to stuff I've heard and the Furutech/Walker items are really worthwhile although the cost of the Furutech is rather steep even for my system. I do own a VPI 16.5 record cleaner and use Disc Doctor for maintenance of LPs-a fantastic bargian for anyone with a sizable record collection. So, don't lambast all tweaks until you've tried them.

P.S. Herbie's Tube Dampers are MAGNIFICENT to remove unwanted vibrations/ringing, etc. in tubes. I've tried all sorts of devices (not expensive ones though-even silicon washers at $1 each), these things are made and work differently depending on the elastomer and ring vibration damping characteristics. Herbie's such a great guy, he let me try out some of his other dampers. The only one that damped sound too much was his VPI weight damper.
Also, the Shakti hallograph is MAGNIFICENT. It is expensive but in a $40k system (or even in a $2k system) it is fantastic at helping your room problems with a benign device. Had I made my own, it would have taken as much time at minimal wood cost but maximum labor to construct. At about $800 a pair, let Shakti build it for you.
For a real treat, try a concrete stepping stone under a power conditioner or over/on any transformer to remove/stop vibration. At $1.29 each for a 12" X 12" stone, a bargain. Or, buckwheat pillows under CD players, solid state devices, etc. They're cheap vibration eliminators too! I'm all for cheap or good devices, not junk science.
