ELAC has announced their new 240 series of loudspeakers that feature a "Crystal Membrane" (aluminum cone stamped with a crystal like appearance). ELAC claims that the stamping process used to create the crystal membrane provides a very wide transmission range which allows a lot of flexibility in the design process as well as making the speakers' sound less dependent on their location in the listening environment. The woofer and midrange drivers in the 240 series both feature the rigid aluminum stamped cone with an angled crystaline surface structure.

Another interesting feature of the drivers is explained below.

"The voice coil is not only - like usually - joined to the neck of the paper cone (see position "1" in the picture [below]) but also to the bottom of the aluminium dome (position "2"). This design results in the expansion of the transmission range of the respective woofers or midrange drivers by nearly an octave. Therefore the abbreviation "XR" (eXtended Range) has been introduced." - ELAC

Remember what I was saying yesterday about where high-frequencies are emitted from Lukas? :) ELAC has a very good idea working here - attaching the former to the center of the aluminum cone while also attaching the former to the base of the main paper diaphragm.
