The 703 is a full 3-way design. Twin bass drivers, with stiff paper/Kevlar® cones further strengthened by B&W's unique girder-like mushroom construction, work in parallel in a Flowport-tuned cavity to handle all the bass frequencies.

Freed from the need to produce any bass signals, the dedicated FST Surround less midrange driver operates in its own isolated cavity within the cabinet. The combination of its woven Kevlar® cone and mechanically matched outer suspension enables this driver to portray the finest nuances in the signal, giving instruments their correct timbral character and positioning them accurately on the sound stage.

The tube-loaded tweeter is freely mounted on top of the cabinet to give a sense of airiness and to reduce the listeners' awareness of the speakers as discrete sound sources.

Great Speaker

by joetama

Pros: Very Clean, Open, Tight Bass, Great Imaging
Cons: Need a strong amplifier, can be temperamental on positioning, not best in a small room

I have been amazed by these speakers ever since I brought them home and cartoned them.

They stand about 40 inches tall w/o spikes so they are by no means a small loudspeaker. A rather neat feature is the curved top with the tweeter also located on top of the enclosure.

When I first purchased them they sounded amazing, a bit strong on the top end. But, once I got them home and started playing with them they only got better. After figuring out how to position them the best (3-4 ft away from any wall, kicked slightly in so the listening position is a few degrees off of center) the speakers disappear. In some cases I swear the sound is coming from behind me.

One thing that I do not like, and this is a stretch, is the amount of time they take to position. There is a BIG sonic difference on where you place these speakers. I have also found that the high frequencies lighten up a lot more than they already are if you tilt the enclosure back .75-1.25 degrees from vertical.

But, overall they are a fantastic speaker. I wouldn't want to use them in a small room, because I did before I went to a much bigger room. They get a bit nasty when they are trapped in a small space. They are defiantly designed to fill a big room with ease.
