I remember when VCRs became available to the public. JC Penney had two brands to sell, both were top loading. They had the Sony BetaMax for $1250, and an RCA VHS for $1000. A friend of mine bought the RCA. With the purchase, he could pick two movies from a list, and receive them in the mail. He chose M.A.S.H. and Vanishing Point. We wore those movies out watching them over and over. There were no movie rental stores back then, and the movies were $80-$90 each, to buy them. So, we watched them over and over. BetaMax actually had better sound and picture, but VHS eventually won out because the blank tapes had longer recording times. How times have changed.........
