beat I myself usually go with Sony products, unless I find a very very appealing deal from any other manufacturer. I also did not have any problem with any of there systems and I can attest that the speaker playback is crystal clear even at volumes that will not let you stay in the same room for more than 10 seconds.

jvc Sony makes good tvs and blu ray players, but their receivers and HTIBs (home theater in a box) leave a lot to be desired. They tend to not hold up as well as others. I'm not real familiar with Technics HTs. They made decent stereos back in the 70s. They're made by Panasonic, and I, personally, don't like Panasonic at all, because of past experiences.

For home theater, a couple of the best systems are Denon and Onkyo. If you're not experienced with setting up systems, I'd stay away from Denon. They are very good equipment, but not easy to setup and use. Especially their remotes. Onkyo is the easiest to setup and use. They are a lot of bang for the buck. Onkyo's HTIBs are very good because they give you a real receiver, with plenty of features and inputs, which most other brands don't. If you're going to get an Onkyo HTIB, I suggest the minimum of the HT-S5300, because it includes a powered subwoofer, instead of a passive subwoofer. So, in the future, if you decide to upgrade speakers and/or sub, it will be easier to do. A powered sub also leaves more power for the receiver to use.

Buying a receiver and speakers/sub separate is always the best, but it runs into more money to get something good. Good speakers aren't cheap, and they are the most important part of a system, since they are the sound of the system. They can't afford to give you real good speakers in an HTIB, at the HTIB's price point. The Onkyo system gives you as good a speaker set as you'll get, in an HTIB. To get a good speaker set for home theater, I'd expect to pay a minimum of $1000, just for the speakers. Then $400-$500 for the receiver, and $150-$300 for blu ray player. There are good blu ray players for $500 and above, but most don't want to spend that much on a player.
Good luck with whatever you decide on.

Sony, Technik or other?

Our household loves music and watching films and this year we have thought to pool our money and invest in a home theatre.

We have looked at several and arguments are ensuing. Some of us like Sony, while others think that Technik is the best. We are having a tough time.

Any thoughts on this, or alternatives?
